The solvent for both latex and waterborne alkyd paints is water, but these two paint types cure in very different ways. A latex paint contains small vinyl acetate or acrylic particles that coalesce to form a semi-permeable film when the water evaporates. When this film dries it can be recoated a few hours later, but the surface is soft, and this makes it vulnerable to damage until the surface is fully cured. This is a problem because it could take up to a month for a latex paint surface to fully cure. An Advance alkyd paint uses a polyester resin; this reacts with oxygen, and it then cures to form a hard vapor impermeable coating. An alkyd painted surface can be sanded and additional coats applied after around 24 hours. The paint is already hard enough to continue working with at this point, and it will continue to cure through the lifespan of the paint.

Drawbacks
When considering alkyd paint, you should be aware of a few drawbacks. Namely, alkyd paint is more toxic for the environment than water-based paints. Also, alkyd paints are more likely to spatter than latex or true oil paints. Therefore, you need to be more careful when you are applying the paint. Also, make sure you tape or cover with drop cloths anything you don’t want to get painted. Alkyd paint is not the best paint for every application, but when it’s appropriate, it’s one of the best options.
